Bookmark manager glossary: terms explained

Plain definitions of bookmark manager, read-later app, full-text search, embedding, readable copy, snapshot, workspace and more.

This glossary defines the terms used on Nisaba's help pages. Each entry says what the term means in general and, where it applies, what it means in Nisaba.

Bookmark manager

A tool that stores links to web pages and helps you find them again with folders, tags and search. Nisaba is a bookmark manager with AI. Everything you save lands in your Library.

Read-later app

A tool where you put pages aside to read at a better time. In Nisaba, you choose Later in the extension or Save for Later in a bookmark's menu. Read Later in the sidebar lists the pages.

Search that looks through the whole text of a page as well as its title. In Nisaba, turn on Full text in the Library search to search inside saved pages and AI summaries. It matches the words you type, and it keeps working when AI is off.

Search by meaning

Search that ranks pages by the idea you describe, in your own words. In Nisaba, you find it under Ask, on the Find tab, and it shows ranked results. Search by meaning uses AI credits. If AI is off or your credits run out, Find uses keyword ranking. AI output can be incomplete or wrong.

Embedding

A list of numbers that stands for the meaning of a piece of text. A system compares these lists to find texts with a similar meaning. In Nisaba, OpenAI creates embeddings for search by meaning. Saving a page, categorizing it with AI or opening it in the reader sends its text to OpenAI in sections for this. While AI is off, nothing is sent.

Readable copy

The page text that Nisaba keeps, so you can read and highlight it even after the site changes or disappears. The Saved copies menu in the reader lists the copies of a page.

Full-page copy

A stored copy of a page as it looked, with its layout and images. Nisaba keeps a readable copy of the page text. For a page behind a login, the extension can send the page as you see it when you choose Save copy. Send to Wayback sends the address of a public page to the Internet Archive, which keeps a public snapshot.

Citation

A reference that names the source of a statement. In Nisaba, answers in Ask name the saved pages they come from, so you can open them and check the answer. Read the source to confirm the answer.

Snapshot

A copy of something at one point in time. In Nisaba, a snapshot is a saved version of your open tabs, kept when you turn on Sync open tabs in the extension. Free shows the last 30 days, Pro shows all kept snapshots, and every plan keeps the latest 1,000.

Workspace

A group of bookmarks for one project or topic. In Nisaba, a workspace has its own sections and saved views, and nothing moves out of your library. You share one with a public link or an RSS feed only when you choose.

Personal knowledge management

The practice and the tools for capturing, organizing and connecting what you know, including notes you write yourself. Nisaba covers the part that deals with saved web pages, highlights and notes on them. See the page on bookmark managers and PKM tools for when each fits.
