AI and privacy

AI and your data

Which AI providers Nisaba uses, what they receive, where they process it, and how to switch AI off.

AI runs on our servers and at the providers named in the AI policy, not on your device. There are no bring-your-own API keys.

AI is switched on for new accounts. You can switch AI off for your account in the settings. Everything else keeps working.

What AI does in Nisaba

  • Category and tag suggestions for saved pages
  • Hints about possible duplicates
  • Ranking of search results
  • Search by meaning
  • Ask your library: answers from your saves with source references
  • Summaries and translations

Providers

  • OpenAI handles answers, summaries, translations, category and tag suggestions, and embeddings for search by meaning. It also ranks search results when TypeSafe returns no usable result.
  • TypeSafe AI, Inc. ranks the results when you use Find in Ask.

Settings → AI lists the providers that receive content while AI is on.

What is sent

OpenAI only receives the content a task needs and, under its API terms, does not train models on it. That means titles, URLs, notes, text excerpts, your questions and search queries, and for pages with little text, their preview image.

OpenAI may retain API inputs, including images, for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, and longer only where the law requires it or it is reasonably necessary to protect OpenAI's services or third parties from harm.

When you use Find in Ask, TypeSafe receives your search query and the title, address without query string, tags and short summary of the candidate entries. Under its contract terms, TypeSafe does not use the data to train models. It does not store the data sent, but processes it only to answer the request in question.

Some transfers happen without a separate AI request. When you open an entry in the reader, its text is sent to OpenAI in sections to create embeddings for search by meaning.

Where it is processed

Answers, summaries and category suggestions currently all use OpenAI, which may process the data outside the EU, including in the USA. TypeSafe processes the data in the USA.

Nisaba runs on servers in Germany. The safeguards for transfers to the USA are described in the privacy policy.

Preview images

When a saved page has little readable text, for example because of a sign-in or cookie page, Nisaba also sends its preview image to OpenAI when it categorizes the page. OpenAI can then suggest a category, tags and a short summary from it.

  • The image is reduced in size and is not stored for this.
  • Preview images from X, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, TikTok, Bluesky and YouTube are never sent.
  • Images are not used to recognize people or to draw conclusions about people.

To keep AI on but stop sending preview images, open Settings → AI and turn off Send preview images to AI. It is on by default.

Switch AI off

  1. Open Settings, then AI.
  2. Under Use AI on my content, turn off the AI processing switch.

While AI is off, nothing from your account is sent to an AI provider, including preview images. Saving, reading, highlights, keyword search, import and export keep working.

Tip: Language of AI output in the same place sets the language for summaries, tags and subcategories.

Limits of AI

AI output can be incomplete or wrong. Categories and tags are suggestions you can change. Answers name the saved pages they come from, so you can check them. Do not rely on AI output for legal, medical or financial decisions.
